After many happy, thrilling and contented hours sailing around Guernsey and Herm, and more recently the coast of Cornwall, I shook hands on the sale Sea Spray today.
A great little boat that her new owner will be mooring just around the headland on the Yealm, so I may well bump into her again on my travels with Hesperous, metaphorically I
hope! Hesperous is my new old gaff cutter, an open boat that I will keep at home and trail to the waters that take my fancy. In practice, much of this will be the Sound and Sea near Plymouth and River Fowey, as these areas are excellent sailing grounds and also have good slipways.

The beauty of an open ‘day sailer’ is that I can go to different areas quickly and the South West leaves me with plenty of choice. The Camel estuary at Padstow, Newton Ferrers on the Yealm, and the beautiful Helford river are now all accessible for a day out.
So it may be the end of one era but, of course, the start of a new one that I’m eagerly anticipating!
